Master Silversmith Richard Tsosie (Navajo)
Richard Tsosie, a highly-acclaimed Diné (Navajo) jeweler and sculptor born in 1956, is celebrated for his sophisticated contemporary Native American art. Hailing from the Wide Ruins area of the Navajo Nation, he, along with his brother Boyd Tsosie, studied under the influential Kenneth Begay at the Navajo Community College. The brothers first achieved national attention when featured in the 1979 Arizona Highways Jewelry Collectors Issue.
Tsosie is renowned for his mastery of intricate techniques, particularly Silver Overlay and detailed Mosaic Inlay. His work is distinguished by its use of top-quality natural materials like turquoise, coral, lapis, and fossil ivory, often set in sterling silver and 14k gold. His dynamic designs, which he explains represent the "ups and downs of life," frequently incorporate symbols like the lightning bolt and arrow.
His award-winning work has been exhibited widely and is held in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions, including The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, The Heard Museum, and The Museum of Northern Arizona.
