Handcrafted by Ramona Bird, Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo), authentic heishi beads are individually hand-cut from natural shells or stones and center-drilled into rough square fragments. These raw pieces are strung tightly together and patiently hand-rolled along a grinding surface, smoothly shaping them into uniform, fluid discs as a single strand. Up to 70% of the raw material is abraded away in the process, resulting in exceptionally smooth, seamless jewelry that moves like liquid stone.
