This is a perfect storyteller made from clay. The Pueblo de Cochiti is the birthplace of the Storyteller. The first Storyteller was made by Helen Cordero in 1964. Each artist interprets the figurative image differently. This storyteller holds four smiling babies in her arms. Each baby is holding a toy object.
The potter, Annette Tafoya Romero has been making these since the ‘80s, on and off again. We were lucky to have her visit recently telling her story on the process. All the materials are gathered from the reservation and close to where she lives. She digs all her own clay and then hand builds each piece. She also gathers cow patties as she walks with her husband searching for stones. This material is used for the baking process, when the pieces are fired and glazed. Her work is truly collectible.
